Two Player Checkers

The Checkered Past 4

Now the rules for Checkers were set and the game was played throughout the world, with a variety of variations to the game play. Books were written on the game as early as the 1500’s, where the first account was published in 1547 by Antonio Torquemada of Valencia, Spain. Two hundred years later, William Payne, an English mathematician, wrote his own treatise on Draughts in 1756.

In 1847, the first world championship was awarded and eventually, as time passed, it became apparent that certain openings always gave one opponent the advantage. For this reason, two move restrictions were developed for expert players and this led to three move restrictions in some tournament Checkers.

However, the game of Checkers was not restricted to a board game played on a flat surface; in fact, the first computer program to play the game was created in 1952 by Arthur L. Samuel. Gradually, computerized game programs improved because of ever increasing speed and capacity. The challenge of machine versus human was on.

Unfortunately, there was a time when chess outstripped Checkers or Draughts on the social strata as a parlour game and it lost its status of gentlemen’s game in Germany and Belgium, being subsequently termed as a game for mere children’s amusement. Checkers lost ground in England, France and Spain but survived as a rather simple game, not one as challenging as chess.

However, from the early inscriptions in the Temple of Thebes in Egypt to reference made in Homer’s Odyssey that checkers games were played in the palace of Ulysses in Ithaca to modern tournaments in the 21st century, Checkers has retained its popularity for many. It is not merely child’s play. Checkers can become as challenging and complex, as time consuming and as difficult as any game of chess. Masters and Grandmasters show the very essence of this game in tournaments around the world time and time again. Checkers involves strategy, sound training in logic and a daring heart.
