Checkers Terms
Checkers terms are more than simply moving little red and black
‘chips’ or
‘men’ across
a checkered board; it is, in fact, understanding
basic terminology within the game and then
applying these terms to your checkers’ strategy.
The following checkers terms are constant definitions in the game of checkers.
BLOCK TERM:
A position wherein all the pieces of one color are immobilized so that no further
moves can be made by the player.
COOK CHECKERS TERM:
A deviation or improvement from accepted play in published analysis, especially
when it is reserved by a tournament competitor to surprise his/her opponents.
CRAMP CHECKERS TERM:
The control, usually in a corner, placed by some pieces upon enemy pieces
so that the opponent cannot advance without disadvantageous exchanges or loss of
pieces.
CUT CHECKERS TERM:
Includes play checkers online rules, an exchange
of checkers pieces, especially when the game
captures are completed in different systems
of play.
DOUBLE-CORNER TERM:
A pair of squares such as 1 and 5 or 28 and 32.
EXCHANGE TERM:
Where the checkers players capture and counter-capture pieces of the opposite color.
KING NOW TERM:
The first rank where single ‘men’
are crowned in either 1-2-3-4 or 29-30-31-32.
MAN OFF TERM:
Where checkers players simplify their position by various exchanges.
THE MOVE CHECKERS TERM:
Is an advantage in a frontal opposition of the pieces where the player with
‘the move’ can force an enemy piece or pieces to retreat.
PERPETUAL DRAW TERM:
Player achieves this draw by a repetition of the same series of moves, deviation
from which is impossible or fatal to the player’s opponent.
RESTRICTION PLAY TERM:
Checkers competition wherein the first two or three checkers moves are fixed by
the chance selection of moves already established in a list of sound openings.
SHOT CHECKERS TERM:
A forced series of checkers exchanges that may result in an advantage to the player
who forces the play.
SINGLE-CORNER TERM:
Square 4 or square 29.
SQUEEZE TERM:
An attack placed on an enemy piece that is forced to advance.
STAR MOVE (also STARRED MOVE):
The only correct move to win or to hold the draw as indicated by an asterisk next
to the move in the established game rules.
STEAL (a piece) TERM:
Checkers player wins a piece that is isolated from the others on the board so
that it can’t be defended or advanced in safety.
STROKE CHECKERS TERM:
A series of moves and exchanges that may result
in an advantage to one player; this checkers
term sometimes means the same as ‘shot’,
but it is usually reserved from more extended
plays such as when non-capturing moves come between exchanges.
