Checkers in Bavaria (1906)

This hand coloured engraving from a Harper’s Weekly edition depicts yet another checkers game in a friendly social setting between two men in Bavaria where several onlookers observe and enjoy the play.

The Game of Checkers, Ghardaia
La partie de dames (1911)

The artist was based in Ghardaia, Algeria and painted genre scenes of daily life as seen in the Saharan cities and she favoured the Orientalist style that was very popular in France at the time.
The painting depicts a street scene a casual game of checkers amongst the locals in the square; the players are enjoying a relaxing game around the checkerboard with shoes off and focus on the next play; the mood displays a friendly atmosphere outside in the village courtyard during the daytime in the bright sunshine and the players are portrayed totally engrossed in the checker moves on the checkerboard.
The motif of the painting readily displays with detailed realism the diverse cultural aspect of the people and the checkers game as a leisure activity.
The artist used warm colours in light, rich sandy, yellow and orange tones to convey the warmth of the climate and the friendship surrounding the checkers game as well as traditional clothing of the Algerian people.
This scene presents a clear visual image and historical representation of Northern Africa.
