Quoting Norman
Rockwell, "Without
thinking too much about it in specific terms,
I was showing the America I knew and observed
to others who might not have noticed.”
- Artist Norman Rockwell was a popular
American artist, illustrator and humorist,
who painted for publication so that more
than just a limited few could view and enjoy his work.
- Throughout his career, Norman Rockwell
created stunning depictions of different
aspects of every life, where themes included
family, courtship, work ethics, holidays,
entertainment and more serious subjects like patriotism.
- Rockwell was associated with the Saturday
Evening Post as a cover illustrator for
47 years and through this medium, the great
Norman Rockwell found his public and became a well known artist.
- During the 1940’s, artist Norman
Rockwell lived with his family in Vermont
and much of his work reflected small town,
rural American life and typical scenes
from that era can be viewed in his paintings
of a friendly checkers game between two
older opponents, as in the ‘Last
Move’, and the ‘Checker
Players’ set in a circus environment
(above).
- Artist Rockwell's art displayed a love
of realism and natural expression and his
focus was often on postures and expressions
of both people and animals and his use of
color would ad a certain dimension to each scene or setting.
- Rockwell eventually left the Post and
joined forces with Look magazine and during
the next ten years, his illustrations reflected
his deeper concerns and beliefs, as artist
Norman Percevel Rockwell depicted
his thoughts on civil rights, the war
on poverty, and space exploration.
