Checkers Artist Lisa Grå Jensen
Lisa Grå Jensen
from mid 20th Century to early 21st Century
Søborg, Denmark
Cow Dealers
- Lisa Grå Jensen grew up in Denmark and then after regular schooling, attended the Sir John Cass School of Art in Whitechapel, London and then later in 1978 acquired an Honors BA degree in Graphic Design and Book Illustration at Camberwell School of Art, London.
- After completing her art education, Lisa was hired by B.L. Kearley Limited and began her career as a full time illustrator creating illustrations for various book publishers such as Hamlyn, MacMillan, Marshall Cavendish, the BBC, Puffin Books and Camden Graphics.
- Since the late 1980’s, she became a freelance painter/illustrator and created numerous artistic depictions of genre scenes in strong illustrative designs and cartoon like compositions.
- Her early works entailed town or cityscapes, country scenes and landscape genre motifs including houses, yards, meadows, the hen house, backyards, rivers, farmland and animals and the café.
- These themes were depicted in a more somber palette in darker hues, creating more serious views though some pictures did contain a humorous element such as the Town Hens where a woman was feeding her hens in the backyard with a fence falling down beside her and the neighbor’s laundry blowing in the wind; her creations display plenty of every day detail and energetic motion.
- Her style developed into a bolder and brighter palette of vivid colors and unique compositions where her unusual style and humorous motifs created an interesting Naïve art form.
- Her motifs have taken on a more light hearted and humorous air and many of the scenes have become more cluttered with objects; her subject matter has focused on carnivals, Nativity scenes, animals set within landscape scenery and every day scenes described with an honest heart.
- Her distinctive style comes through in Cow Dealers where her humor shows through in the cows looking on a checkers game between the dealers and while the two checkers players are intent on their moves at the checkerboard, the third figure is staring at a cow gazing at him.
- Her bright colors and animated characters create an interesting view of a leisurely game of checkers played at a random spot in the country; the comedic element is the notion that the men stopped for a quick game of checkers, even though they would be making a deal for the cows and the one cow seems intent on the action at the checkerboard too.
