Game of Checkers
Artist Twan de Vos
Artist Twan de Vos,
from 1961- present day,
near Tilburg, Netherlands.
“I find my
inspiration in everyday existence. Everything
I experience or see you can find back in my
artwork. In a humoristic, someway anecdotic
way I paint humans and their feelings. Despite
the everyday themes and the abundant color
use not all the artwork is as cheerful as it
looks at first glance, but it is meant to evoke
a smile…a smile of recognition.”
- Artist Twan de Vos attended the Academy
of Art in Arnhem and received a diploma
in 1993. Twan de Vos began a professional
career as an illustrative artist, but his
private work includes acrylic paintings,
sculptures, lino-cuts and silkscreen prints;
he currently has his studio in an old stone
factory in the meadows facing the Rhine
River in Wageningen.
- Twan’s co-publisher of the Arts
Agenda and co-organizer of the Wageningen
Cultural Circuit.
- Twan de Vos' style is considered
as ‘free
art’ but shows a blend of
Pop and Naïve Art, with much of
a cartoon-like focus in his depiction
of a variety of themes.
- The Dutch artist’s depictions
always seem to be about people, their relationships
and their emotions represented in a vivid
and bold palette, where the black and white
checkers pattern is a unique contrast to
the bright color patterns within the compositional
design.
- Artist Twan de Vos draws his inspiration
from his own daily existence and common
place experiences and each painting is
a collage from the pages of his life during
different time periods because as he says, “feelings
are timeless”.
- Twan de Vos' genre themes are
depicted in an open, humoristic and anecdotal
manner displaying human figures in leisure
activities such as the game of checkers
or situations involving family and friends;
the artwork motif is not always cheerful
in its subject matter but it is created
to still evoke a smile of recognition of
the circumstances or the emotions presented.
- The checkers game scene has been created
by designing the motif in bold, color patterns
in a flat and childlike approach but the
mood represented within the composition
is happy and the checkers players and observers
are having fun around the checkerboard;
the atmosphere conveyed is relaxed and
friendly and the painting evokes a question
~ Who’s going to win?
- The checkered pattern or a colored variation
of it is seen in many of his designs within
the clothing, furniture, tables or flooring
of the scenes to define the setting, theme
or mood.

Checkers
“…I
will only be able to paint a limited number
of paintings in my lifetime. My technique
is very time consuming because I use a lot
of layers of paint to obtain the color intensity
and fully realized effects that I desire.
I believe in quality over quantity.”
By game of checkers artist Twan de Vos, one
of the best artists ever.
