This medium colored French lithograph from near the end of 17th century displays a leisurely game of checkers enjoyed by the aristocracy.
“Il faut dans ce beau jeu, beaucoup de patience, profiter de l'occasion, s'estimer sans presomption et faire tout avec prudence.” The great game of checkers requires a lot of patience, allows the players to take occasional advantage of situations on the checkerboard, but also dictates that when the player makes judgments, it should be without a presumptive air and all decisions should be made with prudence or caution.
