The final pictures show champion Harm Wiersma in two of his competitions from his World Championship match in 1976 defeating Nevio Zorn from Italy and Raoul Delhom from France. This first world championship title was the beginning of a great many successful checkers games in his career. Harm Wiersma has played against numerous Dutch, European and International tournaments and World Championships during the course of his checkers career, which has spanned more than forty four years to date. During that time, the Dutch Grandmaster has faced both Master and Grandmaster opponents across the checkerboard during his checkers career and International players include: Iser Koeperman, Anatoli Gantwarg, Alexander Dibman, Alexei Tsjizjov, Guntis Valneris, Andris Andreiko, ‘Slawa’ Sjtsjogolev, Baba Sy, Fidele Nimbi, Mamina N’Diaye, Raoul Bubbi, and Carl ‘Buster’ Smith. Ton Sijbrands
The players are Harm Wiersma and Ton Sijbrands. They have moved out of the youth category and are facing serious opposition at the checkerboard. How strong are their game skills and analytical techniques? The checkers careers that follow speak loudly for their natural abilities in strategy and tactical moves as well as innovative and imaginative play of these two local, National and International checkers champions. In the first few years of their careers, Harm and Ton participate in many of the same tournaments such as the Suikertoernooi, Bijlmer, National and World Championships. They face each other as opponents and rivals for championship titles, but then as time passes, they move in slightly different directions. Ton Sijbrands steps away from the World competition for about fifteen years because the World checkers circuit proves to be too stressful, though Harm Wiersma continues to play in the checkers arena for a few more years until he is somewhat disillusioned with the outcome of the 1984 World Championship, though he did win the World title. Ton focuses on his writing about the checkers realm and participates in the game at club level and national competitions. Harm Wiersma is involved in coaching for the Dutch Checkers Federation, his business and competitions outside the World arena. He is later involved in politics, but throughout their careers, they still meet at tournaments and game functions and with time, develop a friendship within the circle of the checkers game. As time matures the checkers champions, will their paths be forged closer? Will their innate love of checkers continue to bring these two Dutch former World Champions together time and again and how will they impact the realm of checkers within Dutch society? The future will tell a very interesting story. Keep posted. And so it began... ![]() ![]() Newspaper Article
