Jacob Njoroge Wachira ‘Ezigbo’

Artist Ezigbo, this young artist from Nairobi, Kenya, knows from
personal experience just how profound an effect art
can have on society, especially in the development
of the self esteem, creativity and intellectual development
of young children. In 2004, checkers artist Ezigbo founded ‘Watoto
Wa Kwetu’, which is Swahili for ‘Children
of the Neighborhood’ and began offering
free art workshops to local children from his home
in Mathare, a slum village within Nairobi proper. In
2006, this organization became an official Trust that
continues to grow today, providing free workshops to
hundreds of children as well as opportunities to socialize
and play games likes checkers. Incorporating organizational
and creative design skills from the world of art expression
with the inherent skills that checker games invariably offers.
Artist Ezigbo along with several dedicated volunteers offer
instruction in painting, photography, film, music,
drama, poetry and checkerboard play.
