Russian Champion Checker Players

The individual strength in strategy and tactics at the checkerboard of Alexei Tsjizjov has certainly made a significant difference to the Russian checkers team throughout their years of game play. Aside from participation in indivdual checker matches and team championships, Tsjizjov has also been involved in various challenges in simultaneous play, and on one recent occasion in the Hiltex-Zeeland checkers tournament in 2007, the Russian Grandmaster defeated all fourteen of his opponents in a clear sweep across the checkerboard.

Checkers Champion Alexei Tsjizjov

As with many checkers world champions, there are times when Alexei Tsjizjov also feels a little exasperated with the number of games that end in draws and the ratio of wins to draws so he, too, has developed his own unique variant of the checkers game to get a little more variety in the play and he called his version the “Tsjizjov~cannon”.
In 2003, Alexei headed the World Draughts/Checkers Federation and his experience as a World Champion checkers player who has travelled extensively to compete in many different matches, has given him a background that would have been extremely useful in the federation headquarters.
As of January 2008, Alexei was ranked fifth in the world and his GMI score has been set by the FMJD as 2414. Ton Sijbrands states that Tsjizjov’s style is clear and distinctive, embued with quick plays. According to the Dutch Grandmaster, Alexei makes easy capture decisions, but has also been known to win on simple positions. In the past, the Russian GMI did tend to play the checkers game with a more conservative nature, but as his techniques have developed, so has his aggressiveness in attack and his daring to be more innovative in his play. Alexei Tsjizjov is definitely one of the strongest crossboard players in the 21st century and still has much to offer both his future opponents and the checkers arena in general.

Although Alexei and the Russian team travelled far to Dakar to contest for the Team World Cup in checkers and played different teams from around the globe, they also still faced the now very familiar checkers opponents from the Netherlands and Latvia across the checkered game board under the hot African sun.
