Checkers Around the World Invented Checkers Variants
Space Checkers Game
(1971)
Space Checkers adapted the traditional checkers
game into the 3rd dimension so that instead
of players using twelve checkers on a two dimensional
8 x 8 square checkerboard, each side used eight
men on a 4 x 4 x 4 cube.
The rules of this 1971 Space Checkers game
adaptation were straight forward and fairly
simple:
Black would set up near the south lower edge
of the playing surface and could only move
north and upwards; whereas Red would set up
near the north upper edge of the game surface
and could only move south and downwards. Captures
and crowning were 3D space analogs to the 2D
case. Instead of four large levels, the space
checkers board was split into four towers of
2 x 2 portions and this allowed the player
to more readily reach the pieces at the interiors
of each level without actually interfering
with the visualization of the complete cube.
This space checkers version certainly presented
a unique spin on an ancient game and gave the
players a different challenge in visualization
and strategy.
