Checkers Around the World Invented Checkers Variants
Shifty Checkers Game
by Aurora (1973)
In this era, many game themes were derived
from television shows or comic strip characters.
The cover design of Shifty Checkers displayed
the characters from “Get
Smart”, Maxwell Smart
(Don Adams) and Agent 99 (Barbara Feldman),
which would have enticed and intrigued young
players of the time era. This shifty checkers
game consisted of a game board with moving
parts, red and yellow checkers, a rules instructions
sheet and scoring pegs. The shifty checkers
game play involved checker mechanics with movable
columns on the colorful game board. Once again
the simplicity of Checkers rules had been adapted
to a theme that would appeal to the younger
set and still afford them a chance to display
strategy and analytical thinking on their level.
The shifty game graphics would more likely
hold the player’s
attention than the basic checkerboard of the
original game.
The Publisher described
the Shifty Checkers game in the following manner:
"Checkers with a
new twist. The game board really shifts! Strategy
and luck combine to make SHIFTY CHECKERS a fast
moving board game. If you can't outplay your
opponent, you might still get the breaks and
win."
