Checkers Around the World Invented Checkers Variants
Hoppin Checkers
(1993)
Milton Bradley designed this simple Hoppin checkers
game for children featuring the Disney characters
Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. The hoppin checkers
board was a 7x7 grid of squares with five Rock
spaces and Lily Pad spaces in the middle. Each
player began his/her move from the Rock spaces.
The Lily Pad squares were checkered spaces by
River, which could not be played on.
The hoppin checkers game objective was to get
the five Mickey or Donald pieces to the rock
on the other side of the river. The hoppin
rules of play were similar to regular checkers,
but opponents could not make multiple jumps.
An advanced game of hoppin checkers introduced
Frogs, which were neutral pieces that could
be moved to block board spaces. The first player
to cross the river with all his or her pieces
won this checkers game variant.
