Checkers Around the World Invented Checkers Variants<
Fourhanded Checkers Game
(1974)

This vintage Fourhanded Checkers game variant
consisted of an 11 x 11 square checkerboard
minus one corner square at each corner. The
squares were alternating light and dark as
in the original version of the game, but players
used nine instead of twelve checkers, which
allowed for two to four players, either in
teams or individually, in the game play. At
each corner of the fourhanded checkers board,
four Pots were situated for first king, first
double jump, first triple jump and winner.
The checker pieces were colored in the traditional
Red and Black, but also in Yellow and Blue.
Many of the fourhanded movement rules were
similar to classic checkers except that a player
must jump to capture, if possible; however,
the player could also choose among the available
jumps. This adaptation is the same as in many
of the existing checkers game variants around
the world today. This was an interesting four
player variant where the four Pots would add
to the challenge if they were filled with something
of value or titles such as ‘King
of the World’. Fourhanded checkers
game was noted to be a quick and unpredictable
game with the four players coming from all
sides.
