Checkers Around the World Invented Checkers Variants
Extreme Checkers Game
Another Checkers variant created by Peter
Aronson in 2001 is the game of Extreme Checkers.
He states that this is like playing two games
of American Checkers at the same time, while
combining the game with a War Variant Hasami
Shogi-style custodian capture in addition to
the regular capture by jumping.
Extreme Checkers Rules of Play:
~ Extreme Game Board ~
- This extreme checkers game is played on a standard 8
x 8 checkerboard consisting of 64 alternating
light and dark squares, but here all the
squares are used.
- The extreme checker board is positioned so that there
is a dark double corner on the player’s
right side and a dark single corner on
the left.
- Each player begins with 24 checkers
with one opponent using light colored pieces
and the other using dark colored pieces.
~ Object of Extreme Checkers Game ~
- The extreme game objective is to capture all
the opponent’s pieces on either the
red or the black squares by jumping over
them or sandwiching them so they can’t
move, or else block the opponent so that
he/she cannot move any further.
~ Game Starting Position ~
- Each player positions the checker pieces
on both the light and dark squares of the
first three rows closest to the end line.
~ Extreme Game Moves & Capture ~
- Single checkers are only allowed to
move diagonally forward right or left by
sliding into an adjacent unoccupied square
or by jumping over an opposing checker
to an empty square beyond.
- Capture is a compulsory move and is
achieved by jumping over one or more of
the opponent’s checkers.
- Maximum capture is required so that
as long as there are opposing pieces in
the path of the checker, these must be
captured.
- Capture by sandwiching the opponent
is automatic, but the player is not required
to move in order to capture this way.
- An opponent’s checker is sandwiched
when it moves to one end of a column or
row of opposing men and a
‘friendly’ checker
is at the other end.
- If capture by sandwiching occurs at
the edge of the board, then the capture
may wrap around the corners.
~ Promotion to King ~
- As in a game of American Checkers/Draughts,
a single extreme checker is promoted to
king when it reaches the opponent’s
last row.
- A king may move and capture in all four
diagonal game directions.
