Checkers Around the World Invented Checkers Variants
Chinese Checkers Game~ Contrary to Chinese belief ~Chinese Checkers game, which dates back
ca 1880, is NOT a ‘checkers’variant.
Although this game is popular in Chinese-speaking
regions, it does not actually originate from
China or for that matter, anywhere in Asia.
Nor is Chinese checkers game a variation
on Xiangqi, which is also known as "Chinese
chess". The actual Chinese game
was invented in Germany in 1893 under the
name Stern-Halma, as a variation on the older
game of Halma. "Stern" refers
to the fact that the board is star shaped
rather than square as in the game of Halma.
The name of Chinese Checkers originated
in the U.S. to make the game sound more exotic
and unique and ironically was mostly introduced
to Chinese speaking regions by the Japanese. A two player chinese checkers game should also be played from opposing triangles, while in a three player game, the pegs should start in three triangles equidistant from each other. The objective of the game is to be the first to player to move all ten marbles or pegs across the board and into the opposite triangle. Before the game begins, each player chooses a color and the ten corresponding marbles or pegs are placed in the appropriately colored triangle. A toss of a coin decides who starts. Each player then takes turns moving a single marble or peg of his/her color. In one turn, a marble or peg may either be moved into an adjacent hole or it may make one or more jumps over other marbles or pegs. Where a jumping move is made, each jump must be over an adjacent marble or peg into an unoccupied hole directly beyond it. Each jump may be over any colored marble or peg including the player's and can proceed in any one of the six directions. After each jump, the player may either finish or continue the jumping sequence over another marble or peg. On rare occasions, a player will be able to move a marble or peg all the way across the board from the starting triangle into the opposite triangle in one turn! Marbles or pegs are never removed from the game board. It is permitted to move a marble or peg into any hole on the board including holes in triangles belonging to other players, even triangles not presently in use. However, once a marble or peg has reached the opposite triangle, it may not be moved out of the triangle, though it may be moved within the triangle. The first player to occupy all ten destination holes is the winner. It should be understood that no chinese checkers game player may deliberately leave a marble or peg in his/her own triangle with the sole purpose of blocking the opponent’s marble or peg so that the hole is occupied and thereby preventing the other player from winning.
